| WRITERS'
STRETCH & TONE
8 week Tuesday evening cycle led by Matthew Curlewis
This workshop repeats throughout the year as a place for writers
to continually hone their craft, not through endless discussion, but through
the practice of writing itself. Writing suggestions encourage participants
to experiment and play – in the sessions – with different
forms, voices and styles. In this process we learn how to read and listen
to our own and to others' work more closely, and learn how to give and
receive feedback to strengthen our writing skills.
In addition to these writing opportunities, time is also made available
to review and analyse participant manuscripts in a range of forms –
from poems and short stories, to screenplay excerpts and works still finding
their form. And the more diverse group the better. Advanced writers can
still learn plenty from beginner writers' fresh, new approaches, while
different ages and national backgrounds level the playing field, keeping
our focus on simply what works, and what matters, in good writing.
This workshop is an ideal opportunity for participants to both generate
new work, and to revise and edit previous work samples. At the end of
8 weeks we can't guarantee you'll win any writing races, but you'll certainly
have stronger writer muscles, and will be ready to take on new writing
challenges.

WRITING
AND DEVELOPING TELEVISION DRAMA
Weekend Masterclass led by Liz Doran
Scriptwriter Liz Doran will lead a masterclass on creating
and developing successful adult television drama. Notions of genre and
style eg: sit-com, drama, dramedy, procedurals, etc as well as the different
requirements for writing mini-series, telemovies and long form series
will be discussed. Examples of internationally successful TV series will
be examined and their development process and story elements investigated.
The workshop will also explore the importance of producer relationships,
budget, location, audience, time-slot and especially genre. Some of the
craft areas to be considered include creating engaging characters, working
with the location/set split, combining serial and "story engine"
elements, long form story arcs, plotting for ad breaks, generating dramatic
tension, introducing and maintaining serial elements and understanding
A, B and C storylines.
Previous television or film writing
experience is not required. The masterclass is intended for writers considering
developing TV series, but is also a fun and interesting way to analyse
and understand the creative engines of your favourite TV dramas.
